Wow, just wow! This was the 4th annual 10 Y Fan event held and it certainly didn’t disappoint! For once, apart from 20 minutes of slight drizzle, the weather was stunning! There were plenty of pictures of the wonderful sunset that greeted us in the early evening and the following morning was a glorious day of sunshine. Granted, it was a wee bit chilly at the top but all the climbers didn’t want to hang around for too long anyway!
The volunteers in the tent and on the mountain were in top form as always and put smiles on the faces of all the climbers. The BBQ cooked by our own Eric and Heineken Jason was very popular and seemed to disappear fast! We have to say a huge thankyou to the Nant Ddu lodge who helped us refill the water containers throughout the event, estimates are that we went through over 300 litres of water! The new passport system had good feedback – a huge thankyou to Lou & Rebecca who spent hours printing & laminating them! And a special thanks to Liam, Rob, Connie, Jason, Rhys & Evan, Ruth and the all the army lads for standing at the top in what felt like sub-arctic winds making sure that all the climbers were in good spirits and had their passports punched! We would also like to thank the wonderful Liz Brown who took it on herself to clean the toilets regularly…a very brave lady indeed! All our volunteers are very special to us and the event could not work without them and from the comments we see after the event it is obvious that the climbers absolutely love them – WELL DONE
Wales’ own, Ryan Jones, took on the challenge and smashed it! Was there ever any doubt? On speaking to him after the event he had only praise for everyone involved and vowed never to take it on again! Ryan joined over 120 people who completed the full 10 climbs and earned their place in the 10 Y Fan history books! That is the most number of people who have completed it which is just astonishing! For those who didn’t complete the full 10 then we are sure we will see them return but we are happy for everyone who took part even if it was just the 1 climb. Pen Y Fan is a hard climb so just taking part and fundraising is our goal so well done to everyone!
The annual ball was held at the Vale Hotel and was fantastic night – some great food, drink, laughs, tears, dancing and the support video from our ambassador Mr Michael Sheen! It was also a very proud moment for us in the launch of the new charity formed off the back of the success of 10 Y Fan. The charity is called Holibobs Children’s Cancer Charity and its aim is to pay for holidays for children going through treatment for cancer or leukaemia. This will be the charity being supported for 2019 and onwards.
Finally, the fundraising. The total raised was just over £75,000 which is just staggering! There were just over 220 people that took part with some raising over £2000 each. This is the largest donation to date that The Kids Cancer Charity has received and will make a MASSIVE difference to them. We really couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out and are so proud to see how everyone has taken the event to heart and are really looking forward to 2019 which will be our 5th year anniversary….watch this space as we want to make this the best event to date! From us all at 10 Y Fan
